MP Aldag Statement Yorkson Lowlands Stormwater Management and Ecological Restoration Investment
John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale—Langley City statement on stormwater management funding for Langley Township
April 19, 2022 – Langley, British Columbia
On April 14, Minister Murray announced that the Township of Langley will be receiving funding for stormwater management restoration.
“This announcement will invest nearly two million dollars into stormwater management wetlands. This includes $692,744 from the federal government. The Yorkson Lowlands Stormwater Management and Ecological Restoration will construct a series of stormwater management wetlands. It will remove existing stormwater infrastructure, install access trail and signage, and revegetate the area with native plant species.
“I have championed the protection of our lands for decades. Wetlands are some of our most vulnerable habitats. This investment will protect Langley’s Yorkson lowlands. This creates a more resilient environment. We will be less vulnerable to extreme weather and it will ensure that our community can enjoy green spaces for years to come. I will be working with the Township to ensure the funding is prompt and this restoration can begin without delay.”

Budget 2022’s focus on housing, economic growth, and climate action aligns with local priorities
John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale—Langley City statement on Budget 2022 priorities in Cloverdale—Langley City
April 14, 2022 – British Columbia
During pre-Budget consultations, John met with individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout Cloverdale — Langley City. Residents wanted three themes to be addressed:
“Housing affordability, economic development, and climate action were consistently the top takeaways from my consultations with constituents. Our community has been hit hard by the housing crisis and needs federal leadership. Budget 2022 engages with the provinces and municipalities to address the shortage of supply. It also makes it easier to become first-time homeowners.
“Our local economy depends on investments into new infrastructure. This includes the SkyTrain extension and community hubs like the Langley Performing Arts Centre. Our government is committing to these investments and new economic opportunities for our community.
“We have experienced increasingly extreme weather that is causing hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars in damages. We are investing more into climate action to protect us from these events and creating new and sustainable jobs for the future.”

MP Aldag Statement on National Standards for Cancer Prevention Among Firefighters
John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale—Langley City statement on Bill C-224
March 24, 2022 – British Columbia
MP Aldag jointly seconded Bill C-224, An Act to establish a national framework for the prevention and treatment of cancers linked to firefighting, to address inconsistencies across provinces and raise awareness for cancer prevention among firefighters:
“Currently, there are no national standards for identifying occupational cancers for firefighters. Manitoba recognizes 19 cancers, while British Columbia only recognizes 9. This is unacceptable. I support the development of a national framework to raise awareness of cancers linked to firefighting and to support improved access to prevention and treatment.
“Our firefighters risk their lives to save others and preserve our infrastructure, leading to increased risk of cancers. The least we can do is recognize the cancers that are occupational risks and provide treatment and preventative measures for our firefighters. I hope this leads to the eventual removal or decrease in the use of these toxins so the risk to firefighters can be reduced as much as feasible given the nature of their profession.
“I will be speaking further on this issue when the bill is first debated on April 4th.”

MP Aldag Statement on S-214: International Mother Language Day
John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale—Langley City statement on Bill S-214
March 24, 2022 – British Columbia
MP Aldag jointly seconded Bill S-214, An Act to establish International Mother Language Day, stating:
“I am very familiar with the contents of Bill S-214. I supported a similar bill during my time in the 42nd Parliament. Senator Jaffer and MP Hardie brought this bill forward in the 43rd Parliament, and now they are trying again. I believe that this Bill will pass this time. International Mother Languages Day promotes the use of one’s mother language, which Canadians take for granted.
“A constituent in my riding, Abdus Salem, immigrated from Bangladesh where his family was discriminated against for not speaking the official language. Surrey and BC already adopted this Day — Canada would be a global leader and uphold our multiculturalism if we adopt this.
I believe that all parties can support International Mother Language Day. It is representative of our openness and multiculturalism, it already exists at other levels of government, and we have a history of protecting minority groups to uphold.”

MP Aldag Statement on Petition in Support for Ukraine
John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale—Langley City statement on support for Ukraine
March 24, 2022 – British Columbia
Today, MP Aldag issued a statement on his support for petition e-3939 that calls on Canada to support actions in Ukraine up to and including support to enforce a no-fly zone:
“Russia illegally invaded Ukraine and is indiscriminately bombing non-military targets, resulting in loss of life of innocent civilians including women and children. Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine has resulted in the mass exodus of millions of Ukrainians to neighbouring countries. This is a violation of the most fundamental democratic principles of sovereignty, self-determination, and the right to life and safety.
“Our sanctions are punishing Russia, but more actions are needed to this invasion. We must fully support President Zelensky and Ukraine. I have heard this over and over from constituents. The President of Ukraine has repeatedly asked NATO to create and enforce a no-fly zone over Ukraine to prevent further atrocities and enable Ukrainian forces to counter Russia’s assault.
“By sponsoring this petition, I am giving a voice to Canadians who are calling for more Canadian support to Ukraine including actions up to and including a no-fly zone. This petition is not calling for Canada to impose a no-fly zone, but for actions that Canada could support without engaging directly without further exacerbating the Russian war on Ukraine.”

✘ Conservative Opposition Motion (Tax reduction on gasoline and diesel)
Voted yea. Bill adopted.
Bill
Conservative Opposition Motion (no. 40)
Vote
Nay.
Rationale
The Conservatives haven’t fully considered the outcomes of the policy they’re proposing. A tax holiday on oil and gas could result in energy companies pocketing the difference in cost and there is no guarantee savings will pass to Canadian consumers at the pumps.
Result
Defeated.
✘ Conservative Opposition Motion (Invasion of Ukraine and natural gas pipelines)
Voted yea. Bill adopted.
Bill
Conservative Opposition Motion (No. 38)
Vote
Nay.
Rationale
We support points a) and b) of the motion. Moments after Russia launched its unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine, the Prime Minister released a statement condemning President Putin. We have since followed up with severe sanctions on Russia and significant lethal and non-lethal aid to Ukraine.
On March 1, 2022, the Liberal Member of Parliament Yvan Baker, introduced a motion in the House of Commons that condemned the “unjustified and unprovoked attack, which was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, as a clear violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the rights of Ukraine to sovereignty, territorial integrity, freedom and democracy” and “stands unwavering and united in our solidarity with the people of Ukraine.”
On point c), in the long run, it is our switch to renewables and hydrogen that will make us truly independent. We have to accelerate the green transition. Because every kilowatt-hour of electricity Europe generates from solar, wind, hydropower or biomass reduces our dependency on Russian gas and other energy sources.
Result
Defeated.
